DESCRIPTION:
APW - Waltham, 22J, unusual center-seconds military watch, 16S, chrome-plated base metal OF display case appears to have been comprised with a rear bezel taken from another case, white enamel dial with 13 to 24 hour indications, SW-SS, lever escapement with visible cap jeweling of lever, satin nickel finish, s#30705684. A rare and visually unique Waltham product, the center-seconds of this movement is driven by its enormous center gear above the rear plates which is propelled by a small gear above the escape wheel. This is only approximately the fourth example of this watch that this cataloger has encountered.
CONDITION:
Mvt: Running, excellent-plus cosmetic mvt condition overall, few scattered fine to micro-fine scratches, few small bits of oxide to steelwork; virtually flawless dial with few minuscule edge nicks under bezel, some small as-made depressions in surface finish at perimeter near 2:30; nearly mint hands; case rear bezel is an apparent replacement as its s# does not match to stamped band s# and as rear bezel is not threading fully flush to band leaving a narrow gap when it reaches its endpoint, case front bezel is without s#, case shows light wear, scattered nicks, rear bezel with some chrome loss to its reeding; tight bow, crown shows light wear; good glass front crystal, plastic rear crystal with few fine scratches.
